It's Not Too Late (And You're Never Too Old) To Start Karate
The movies have it wrong. You don't have to start at the age of 5 to be good at something.
The amazing thing about karate is that you can start at any age, and the later you start, the better. Because unlike a child or teen, you have the ability to work through difficulty, you've got the discipline, and you are in control of your time and effort.
No, you don't have to be fit.
No, you don't have to be strong, or flexible.
Arrive as you are. We have adult students of all ages, and all abilities. From young adults finding their feet, to retirees looking for a way to stay strong, compos mentis, and to socialise. (And we love to socialize!)
Whatever your reason for joining, you are welcome at GRKC. Come as you are - we would love to meet you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can adult beginners with no prior fitness or martial arts experience join?
A: Absolutely. We specifically welcome adult beginners of all ages, physical abilities, and experience levels. Our adult karate classes are structured to help you gain flexibility, relieve stress, and learn practical self-defense at your own pace without any pressure. We work around your abilities - your karate should fit your body, not the other way around.
Q: Do you do competitions? I don't really want to compete at my age.
A: We are a non-competitive dojo, so you will be free of the demands of any tournaments. Your journey is your own, and you won't have to spend extra time and money on training. Traditional karate is a long-term journey of self-discovery and mastery - sports karate takes you away from that.
Q: I did karate at another dojo, or in the past. Will my belt be recognized?
It depends if you are coming from another Goju Ryu dojo, or a completely different style. All students with previous experience are so welcome to come join us, and try out four free classes to get to know what we do. We will discuss your prior experience and rank, and you may find that you can keep your current rank. If it has been a long time since you last trained, you might be on white belt again, but you may have a slightly accelerated path back to your last belt before taking a break.
Q: Do you spar at GRKC?
A: Definitely! Karate without fighting is just for show. We have an annual endurance fighting event to give everyone a chance to pressure-test their training within a safe environment.
However, every reasonable precaution is taken to ensure student safety. We are incredibly vigilant, ensuring that everyone trains in a safe and respectful manner. In all our years of teaching, we have had very few injuries, and nothing that's required an ambulance. We believe in training for a long time AND a good time. We have carefully cultivated a respectful and compassionate dojo culture, and as hard as we train, we also take care of each other.
Sparring is just one part of our syllabus, though. We have a wide traditional and modern syllabus to create well-rounded students at all ages.
